The B&B is facetiously named after
"Uncle Felice", the ancient forefather who, at
the beginning of the XX century, lived in this medieval palace in
San Donato in Poggio, and whose
romantic portrait has outlived the time.
The origins of the small pretty village
San Donato in Poggio date back to the XII
century. During the medieval time it has been one of the eldest Commons of the
"Chianti League",
and the far-end-bulwark of the Florentine territory, in the long and ancient war against
the city Siena. His position was geographically strategic in the past and so it is now:
just in the middle between two wonderful cities of Tuscany, Florence and Siena, both rich of art and history,
and just in the heart of one of the most famous countryside in the world, which is mother of
the tasty, agreeable "
Chianti Classico" wine.
"Via del Giglio", where the B&B is placed, is the main street of this medieval castle,
that rises on the top of a hill and preserves the ancient structure, with part of the stone-wall,
the sight-tower, the stone-well in the main square and the Court Palace. Just outside the gates
of the stone-wall rises one of the most suggestive Romanesque
"Pieve" of this area, that keeps
in his inside a crucifix of the
Giotto school and a baptismal font decorated by
Della Robbia.
San Donato is close to the cross-roads of the local streets to the many wonderful medieval castles
and villages in Chianti: Greve, Panzano, Castellina, Radda, Gaiole, Barberino, San Giminiano,
Volterra, Monteriggioni ...
